Mindfulness and Poetry: A Workshop by Dani and Melizarani

Description

The 2020 Mindful Poet Workshop Series is launching its first two Mindful Poet Workshops alongside the initiative “Poetry & E’thing in Between” during BuySingLit on 13 and 14 June 2020.

The Mindful Poet workshops series combine mindfulness practices and poetry writing techniques to enable and enrich the experience of creating poetry. No previous experience in writing or meditation is required. The workshops are co-facilitated by Danielle Van de Velde and Melizarani T. Selva

"Sensing Stillness" is the theme of the first Mindful Poet workshops in June. Participants will be guided through a series of somatic meditations and then guided into how to translate their sensory experiences into their writing. Sound and touch senses will be explored on 13 June, and the scent and taste senses will be explored on 14 June session.

Mindfulness and Poetry: A Workshop by Dani and Melizarani

Mindfulness Segment (45 minutes)
We will unearth the stories most important to the individual self through the gateway of our senses. Through a series of sensory based exercises, we will explore the use of sound, touch, scent and taste to conjure new metaphors. We will also explore related acclaimed poems to understand how we can play with form in the stories we desire to express.

Poetry Writing Segment (45 minutes)
We will unearth the stories most important to the individual self. Ones we ache to write and ones we yearn to perform. Through a series of sensory based exercises, we will explore the use of sound and memory to conjure new metaphors. We will also dissect poems that came before ours to understand how we can play with form in the stories we desire to articulate. With greater awareness, this workshop will offer a lens to view the crevices of the worlds within ourselves and the vast worlds we choose to build.

Materials will be provided for the participants to stimulate their senses, and all participants have to do is bring a notepad and pen!
